Korea Food Research Institute, proved insulin resistant and diabetes improving effect of Eleutheroside E from Korean Gasiogalpi
  • Dr. Jiyun and his research team, Korea Food Research Institute (director Seokhu Yun), released a research result on September 13. The research has proved that Eleutheroside E, one of main substances from Gasiogalpi, improves insulin resistance and lowers the level of blood sugar.
  • Gasiogalpi (nominal name, Eleutherococcus senticosus (Rupr.&Maxim.)) is commonly known as Acanthopanax (Acantho: thorny tree + panax: panacea, namely, a thorny tree that cures all diseases). It is known that Gasiogalpi has various bioactive effects such as tonic effects, anti-inflammatory effect, and anti-fatigue improvement. However, anti-diabetic effect of Gasiogalpi extract hasn’t been reported yet.
  • The research team found out that Eleutheroside E improved sugar absorption induced by insulin in muscle cells and insulin resistance caused by inflammation factors (TNF-alpha).
  • During the animal experiment with diabetic models (db/db mouse), when 0.003% Eleutheroside E/1 kg of experimental diet was given, it suppressed blood sugar increase(4). This was resulted by improved insulin signaling (5). It was also observed that the number of pancreatic beta cells increased (6).
  • This research was derived from ‘study on regulatory mechanisms of insulin resistance of traditional food phytochemicals’ (research director: JiyunAn), and the related research results were published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
  • The research team completed patent process in Korea (Composition, including the name of invention Eleutheroside E, for the prevention or treatment of insulin resistance or insulin resistance related disease, application number 10-2012-0048806) and transferred the technology to Hambakjae Corp. (CEO Jeonghyeon Kim).
  • Hambakjae Farm has been selected as ‘food function human body application test support business 2013’ by Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affair and Korea Food Research Institute. With 200 million Korean Won of financial support from the government, Hambakjae Farm is now performing clinical testing of Gasiogalpi extract’s blood sugar control effect. With the result of testing, Hambakjae is planning to apply for individual certification of health supplement product from Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

3.Glycemiccontrol effect of Gasiogapi extract and Eleutheroside E

4.Insulin signaling improve effect of Eleutheroside E in animal muscle tissue

  • Insulin receptor: receptor on the cell membrane, which specifically bind to insulin and cause physiological changes in the cells. Insulin signaling begins in tyrosine phosphorylation of the insulin receptor β subunit.
  • AKT: Phosphatase, mediator of insulin signaling, also called protein kinase B (protein kinase B)
  • S6 kinase (S6K): the lower molecular of AKT, biomarker of AKT activity
